Some soaps are made with strong cleansers or heavy fragrances that strip away the natural oils your skin needs. When that happens, your skin feels tight, itchy, or “squeaky.” Natural or handmade soaps usually keep more of their moisturizing ingredients—like glycerin—so they’re often gentler. If dryness is an issue, look for soaps with simple ingredients and added oils or butters, and avoid anything loaded with detergents or synthetic fragrances.

Not always. “Natural” and “handmade” can be great, but those words alone don’t guarantee the bar is right for your skin. Some natural ingredients—especially strong essential oils—can irritate sensitive skin. And some commercial soaps are perfectly fine. The real key is checking the ingredients and knowing what your skin reacts well to. Transparency matters more than the label.

This often comes down to your water. Hard water (water with lots of minerals) reacts with some soap formulas and can leave residue on skin, sinks, and shower walls. Handmade soaps can also feel a little different at first because they retain more natural oils. It doesn’t mean they’re not cleaning—just that the texture and lather behave differently. Using a draining soap dish and letting the bar dry between uses helps keep it firm and reduces residue.

Look for clear, simple ingredients: oils, lye (which disappears during the soap-making process), and natural fragrances if any. If you have sensitive skin, skip strong fragrances, dyes, or long chemical names you can’t identify. Unscented bars or soaps scented only with gentle essential oils are usually safest. When trying a new soap, it’s always smart to test it on a small patch of skin first.

Most soaps last around 6-18 months depending on the ingredients. Any soap with food items in the soap will spoil faster.
